Choose to reuse this weekend

If you’ve got an eye for a bargain and a love of garage sales, then you’re in luck this weekend, with the annual Garage Sale Trail kicking off right across the country.

More than 10,000 garage sales are set to take place on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 October at homes, community groups, charities, local businesses and schools.

More than 10,000 garage sales are set to take place around the country on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 October at homes, community groups, charities, local businesses and schools.

Reuse, recycle and upcycle

Now in its seventh year, Garage Sale Trail is aimed at promoting reuse and bringing communities together. And the organisers are hoping for the biggest and best event yet, having set a weekend target of two million items for sale and 120,000 new neighbourly connections made Australia-wide.

“Garage Sale Trail helps people to think about how we can all take responsibility for the waste we create, as items that are reused don’t end up in council collections or in landfill,” says co-founder Andrew Valder. “It’s also a simple way for people to meet and talk to people in their community, as well as fundraise for good causes.”

Garage Sale Trail started in Bondi Beach seven years ago as means to encourage reuse, celebrate creativity and bring local people together in a fun and social way.

Garage Sale Trail Foundation

The initiative is run by the Australian not-for-profit, Garage Sale Trail Foundation, with the support of over 150 local councils. First held in Bondi Beach back in 2010, the event is now a national movement helping create positive social and environmental change in communities right across Australia.

“We love the creative spirit and colour that sellers bring to their sale names and the unexpected items on offer,” says Darryl Nichols, co-founder, Garage Sale Trail. “Past examples include a vintage tractor, miniature goats, a beachside apartment – and even a couple of grandpas. It’s all part of the fun!”
